Have you ever gone shoe shopping and bought a pair of shoes you didn't like or that really didn't fit you?
I didn't think so...
Therapists are like shoes, sometimes the first pair you try on are great and they're the perfect fit. Sometimes, you need to try on 3 or 4 pairs of shoes before you find the ones you like.
It is okay to shop around for a therapist, in fact I insist that you do!
Why shopping for a therapist is important...
You find yourself sitting in a small room, awkwardly trying to come up with something to say. You do not feel any particular connection to this person, and maybe they aren't doing a great job making your feel a connection. It happens. In life, at work, in our relationships... sometimes we just do not click with a person.
This happens with therapists too.
If you are looking for a new therapist, make appointments with at least three, yes it is a lot of work. And yes, you will be repeating yourself - over - and - over - and - over - again. It is worth it. Maybe one of the therapists office is too hot or maybe they don't get your humor - which if you are like me and have a dark sense of humor, humor is IMPORTANT. Or maybe you go in have an amazing conversation with them, they love Disney like you love Disney, they work with kids too, they get you! I promise you this is a feeling worth the hassle of meeting with other therapists.
